The Skinny on Skinny Jeans: How to Dress in Fashion Like the Celebrities

We have all enjoyed the age of the flare leg jean, but like it or not, the skinny jean is coming back. If you wonder what spurred on this drastic shift in those few inches at the bottom of the leg, I have your answer. The celebrities have taken to this new fashion edge, and they are all sporting the skinny jeans all over the streets of New York and LA.

If you thought the jeans were skinny in the 80’s, the fashion world of 2006 has made a comeback for the skinny jean like never before. The popular jeans of today are so skinny that we call them terms like “drainpipe", “stovepipe", or “cigarette-slim". If you are cringing right now at the thought of wearing the skinny jean, do not fret, because the boot-cut flare leg is still going to hang around. However, the celebrities call the shots in fashion, and therefore, if you want to be what the New York and LA manufacturers call “fashion forward", you should take some time to acquire a pair of skinny jeans.

Finding a great brand of skinny jean may be difficult. All jean companies are making sure they have a line of skinny jeans available for this celebrity shift in fashion. Many of the popular magazines will list all the brand names that the celebs are wearing. Being that these skinny jeans are so tight fitting, you will not see much embellishment on this type of jean. Most of the pockets are plain, and do not seem to differ much from label to label.

However, if you are looking for a skinny jean that is set apart from all the others, I recommend Siwy Denim. Siwy Denim designs a skinny jean that has accumulated much press from the celebrities. The list of stars that have deemed Siwy worthy of their wear includes Beyonce, Nicole Richie, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Hillary Duff, Rachel Bilson, Jessica Simpson, Kate Hudson, Kristin Bell, Rose McGowen, Selma Blair, Jessica Alba, Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss.

Siwy designs the back pocket in a unique fashion that leaves out glittering embellishment, but is adorned with a beautiful stitched filigree pattern on every model. Siwy also desires to include a piece of American history in every jean they produce. Stitched into the waist of each pair of Siwy Denim is a hand-crafted label made from vintage feedsacks. The feedsacks were such a part of American rural life between the 1880’s through 1940’s, and Siwy designs the labels in this fashion so that the owner may feel their jeans are special because of the limited run of labels per print.

Siwy’s jean design lifts the backside and lengthens the legs of the female figure. They're "designed to give curves to girls who don't have them and flatter those who do," as described in YM magazine's back-to-school 2005 issue. Designer Michelle Siwy wears her own denim and states, “I can’t wear anything else."

A note for a woman with larger hips: You too can do the skinny jean. If you wear a skinny pair of jeans, just make sure that you couple them with a longer shirt in order to keep the skinny jeans from accentuating your hips. Long shirts are very popular today, and you can even add a belt to accentuate your waistline as well. An example of the long shirt scenario can be viewed at
